Accept One Another
July 17, 2023On June 25 I preached a sermon on Christian Unity at the Atlanta Church of Christ in Gwinnett.
The basic thesis of the sermon is that Christians in general are not demonstrating the kind of unity that will convince the world about the gospel. If Jesus was preaching in person today, I think he’ be calling on believers to quit fussing about all the wrong things. We need to learn to accept one another without passing judgment on disputable matters.
Here’s the video of the sermon. I’m interested in what you think.
Here’s the link to my commentary on the F. Lagard Smith book: https://christianunityblog.net/category/who-is-my-brother/
And a link to the book at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0966006003?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_0DYRPP59NMHZ1V1D2PWG
That sermon summed up what I have been thinking and trying to say for years. Such a gifted, articulate speaker. I was going to ask for the link to the book review but I see it is here in the comments. Thank you for this work and for your prayers for unity. I have prayed for unity for several decades and this year decided to stop as I saw it as pointless when a minister who was hosting an ecumenical event (where Catholics were present) said to his congregation “Don’t forget who we are. We are Protestants. Don’t forget what the protest was – and still is – about.” I felt then that unity between Protestants and Catholics is impossible because “protest” is the very reason Protestants exist – it’s part of their identity. I really need help getting over this impasse. Really don’t know how to get past that comment by a respected pastor of a large city church.
Charles in Australia
Hi Charles! Thanks for your kind comment and for your passion for unity. It’s encouraging to hear from a like-minded person on the far side of the globe! God is at work and I am excited about the prospects. I’m convinced that God will bring about what Jesus prayed for. My focus is on being part of the solution.
